When Simone’s father dies, her mother succumbs to sorrow, and Simone and her brothers are left floundering in their own unhappiness and loss. But then Simone hears her father calling to her from the poinciana tree outside her window, and she climbs the tree to listen. Despite not believing her initially, her mother agrees to climb and listen too, and she quickly becomes obsessed with the tree.
