Reproduced for the first time, this is the diary of Charles Turnbull Harrisson, who joined Douglas Mawson on his legendary Australasian Antarctic expedition from 1911-13.
Charles was a biologist and artist on the expedition. He was also a gifted writer, and the diary he kept from December 1911 to March 1913 is riveting. It is illustrated with Charles’ own sketches and watercolour paintings of the Antarctic landscape.
Greg Mortimer, an Antarctic mountaineer and adventurer, said, in the book's foreword, “We have fashioned our views of Antarctic history through the eyes of the bosses, but we don’t yet know the words of the men. It is time for the words of the men to reshape that history.”
